Alaska Peninsula Spring Brown Bear Hunts
Species: Big Brown Bear (Ursus Gyas) with highly experienced guides
We hunt
the big Bears by the spot and stalk method as they emerge from the den with
their thick coats of winter hair. It is common to watch big males following
sows for the purpose of breeding.
Wolves are also prevalent in the area. It is no longer required to purchase
a wolf tag in GMU 9D. However, you must purchase a hunting license and a
Brown Bear tag. Some years there is a good run of Steelhead Trout. If time
allows during your hunt you may get the opportunity to fish. A fishing
license is required.
Dates: May 10-17; May 18-25 2012, 2014 (5 hunters on each hunt)
Area: Cold Bay/ Izembek Refuge and State Land - historically one of the very best areas for trophy Brown Bear in the world.
Base Camp Accommodations: Enjoy comfortable heated cabins situated around the kitchen and dining facilities. Share camaraderie while feasting on home cooked meals. Power and hot showers are available at the beginning and end of the hunt - all within a 35 minute flight of your spike camp in prime Brown Bear country. While base camp is plenty comfortable, it is not a lodge.
Spike Camps: Established campsites are in key positions that have been proven over the past 40 years. Each camp consists of 2 tents – (1) 8x8 Eureka and (1) 10x10 Eureka Bomb Shelter or Hurricane Hut – cots, pads, warm sleeping bags, tables, chairs, lanterns, heaters and lots of good food along with a skilled and personable guide. Satellite phones are in each camp and each guide is on a check-in schedule with the base camp. Camps are re-supplied every few days.
Trophy Care: All bear hides are professionally skinned, fleshed, salted and dried. They are shipped at your expense to an expeditor who will then ship them on to your taxidermist of choice. We can provide you with the names of some professional taxidermists if you do not have one who is familiar with life like mounts of bears.
**Arrive at Base Camp 2 days prior to start of hunt (allow for weather)

TROPHY SHIPPING:
Mountain Monarchs will help prepare your trophy(s) for travel. Unless otherwise arranged, Northland Arts Taxidermy of Anchorage will be used as the shipping agent out of Alaska. The hide and skull must be sealed by an ADF&G Representative either at base camp or before it is shipped out of Alaska. Tom Jesiolowski, Northland Arts (907 243 8049), can take care of this procedure before drying and finishing up your hide for travel. Tom should be paid directly for his services as expeditor and taxidermist. Kenny Jones (Skull & Bones 907 260 6592) does a great job using the beetle method on bear skulls. All shipping is billed from David River to Anchorage at the client’s expense. You are required to pay the estimated fee prior to departing David River. Any surcharges that Mountain Monarchs receives from shippers will be passed along to clients.

Barney’s Sports Chalet, Anchorage, at
www.barneyssports.com should be consulted for specialized hunt clothing. Ask for Bob Hodson.
Rifles: your rifle should be equipped with a weather proof scope and dialed in 2” high at 100 yards. Synthetic stocks perform best in the inclement weather.
Recommended Calibers:
.338 Winchester mag - 250 grain minimum
.375 H&H mag - preferred caliber – 270 grain minimum
.416 Rem Mag – 350 or 400 grain bullets
Bullets – No Solids for Bears!!! Swift A-Frame; Barnes Triple Shok; Woodleigh; Noster Partition or similar work well on the big bruins.
It is strongly recommended that you purchase a changeable airline ticket as the weather is unpredictable at this time of year.
